MacBook Battery Draining Fast? Here is the Real Fix

You unplug your MacBook at 100%. Two hours of browsing later, you're at 15%.

It's completely maddening. You start dimming your screen until you can barely see it. You turn off Bluetooth. You close every app. And yet, you can practically watch the battery percentage drop in real-time.

Is your battery physically dead? Probably not.

Most of the time, terrible battery life isn't a hardware problem—it's a software problem. Last month, a rogue background process was quietly burning through my M2 MacBook's battery while it was asleep in my backpack.

Here is how to figure out what's killing your battery, and how to stop it.

Step 1: The Activity Monitor Reality Check

Don't guess what's draining your battery. Look at the data.

  1. Open Activity Monitor (Cmd + Space, type Activity Monitor).
  2. Click the Energy tab at the top.
  3. Click the 12 hr Power column to sort by the worst offenders.

You're looking for apps you haven't used recently that have a massive number next to them. Often, it's a browser tab running heavy JavaScript, a syncing tool stuck in a loop (looking at you, Google Drive), or an app you thought you closed.

Step 2: The "Hidden Startup Items" Problem

When you turn on your Mac, dozens of invisible helpers start running in the background. Many of them are completely unnecessary, and they constantly poll the internet or your hard drive, sipping battery power all day long.

Go to System Settings > General > Login Items.

Look at the "Allow in the Background" list. I bet you have 15 things toggled on. Turn off everything you don't immediately recognize. Adobe Updater? Off. Spotify helper? Off. They don't need to run 24/7.

Step 3: Nuke the Zombie Apps

Sometimes, the apps killing your battery are the ones you "deleted" months ago.

Remember: dragging an app to the Trash doesn't delete its background processes. Those orphaned files sit in your system, constantly trying to phone home, failing, and trying again—burning battery the whole time.

This is why I use CleanDiskGo.

I run the App Uninstaller to completely rip out the digital residue of old apps. No more zombie processes draining the battery while my Mac is asleep.

If your battery is draining fast, stop squinting at a dim screen. Clean up your system's background junk instead.
