How to Clear System Data on Mac (And Actually Free Up Space)

Let’s be honest. You opened your Mac's storage settings, saw a massive grey bar labeled "System Data" taking up 60GB, and thought: What on earth is this, and can I just delete it?

I've been there. Last month, my MacBook Pro literally ground to a halt because System Data had swallowed 85GB of my 256GB drive.

Method 1: The Manual Cache Purge (Free but Risky)

1. Open Finder.
2. Press Cmd + Shift + G.
3. Type ~/Library/Caches and hit Enter.
4. You'll see hundreds of folders. Delete the contents inside the folders, not the folders themselves.

Wait, is this safe? Mostly, yes. Apps will rebuild the caches they actually need. But if you accidentally delete something in /System/Library, you might brick your Mac. So be careful.

Method 2: Nuke Old iOS Backups

Still backing up your iPhone to your Mac? Those backups are massive.

Go to ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/. If you see folders from 2023 and you already use iCloud, trash them. I saved 30GB just by doing this.
