Your Mac Startup Disk is Full? Do This Before You Buy a New Mac

We’ve all seen it. You're in the middle of exporting a video or downloading a game, and boom: "Your disk is almost full."

It's infuriating.

I remember the first time it happened to my 256GB MacBook Air. I panicked. I started deleting random photos, emptying the trash, and even considered if I needed to buy a new Mac just to get 512GB of storage.

Spoiler alert: you don't need a new Mac. You just need to clean up the mess.

Why is your Mac suddenly full?

Usually, it's not your actual files. It's the invisible stuff.

• Hidden app caches that grew out of control.
• Gigabytes of old iOS backups you forgot about.
• "System Data" acting like a black hole.

You can't see these files easily. Apple hides them so you don't accidentally delete something important. But they take up real space.

Step 1: The "Low Hanging Fruit" (Downloads & Trash)

Before we get technical, do the obvious.

Open your Downloads folder. Sort by size. I guarantee there's a 5GB .dmg installer from last year sitting there. Delete it.

Then, right-click your Trash can and actually empty it. Moving files to the Trash doesn't free up space until you empty it. Seriously.

Step 2: Hunt Down the Hidden Caches

This is where the real space is.

1. Open Finder.
2. Hit Cmd + Shift + G.
3. Type ~/Library/Caches and press Enter.

You're looking at the folders where your apps store temporary data. Sometimes, apps forget to delete this data. Spotify, Chrome, and Xcode are notorious for this.

You can select the contents of these folders and delete them. Just don't delete the folders themselves.

Is it scary? A little. But it's usually safe.

Step 3: The 1-Click Fix (What I actually do now)

Let's be real. Digging through ~/Library every month is annoying. And if you delete the wrong thing, your Mac might act weird.

These days, I just use CleanDiskGo.

I downloaded it from the Mac App Store. It’s not one of those sketchy "Mac Optimizers" that pop up on shady websites. It just works.

You click scan, it finds the hidden junk, and you click clean. Done.

• It clears out massive cache files safely.
• It finds duplicate files you didn't know existed.
• It completely uninstalls apps (leaving no trace).

If your startup disk is full, stop deleting your precious photos. Just clean the junk.
